Scientific aspects of the project are led by the European Academy (EURAC Institute for Alpine Environment) and the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. Institute for Alpine Environment at Eurac is responsible for planning, coordination and maintenance. The Eurac Institute for Applied Remote Sensing and the University of Innsbruck engage in further research and cooperation.

The Institute for Alpine Environment was founded in 1995 to perform problem-oriented research on the conflicting priorities of ecology and economy. Located in the heart of the Alps, the Institute offers the ideal conditions for user-oriented studies of mountain areas. The multidisciplinary team of young scientists uses a combination of experimental field research, computer simulations as well as participative trans-disciplinary approaches. The team operates a range of regional, national and international projects in the fields of ecosystem services, biodiversity, bio-geochemical cycles and sustainable development.

The Faculty of Science and Technology of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano was founded in 2007. The scientific competences of the faculty fall into two main areas: Agricultural and Agro-environmental Science and Industrial Mechanical and Energy Engineering. The interdisciplinary approach is essential for solving complex problems, such as the management of mountain areas, energy efficiency, food production and quality, and process and product innovation for industry.
